Allergies griping

The price I pay for living in such a lush and fecund land (Michigan) is wishing I didn't have a nose or sinuses for multiple months, every year.

@souldessin @jforseth210 @nextcloud @protonmail Yeah, one thing I particularly like about ZFS is its data integrity protection. It stores checksum hashes of all the data, and I have a weekly cron job which does a “scrub” and verifies all the data on the disks. Assuming you have some redundancy in your zpool, if it finds any corruption it will automatically fix it with the known-good copy.

@souldessin @jforseth210 @nextcloud @protonmail Yeah, the glacier backups are really about having a backup of the backup in case $#!+ really hits the fan. Like, if I need to retrieve them, it’s probably not my biggest priority since it probably means I need to find a new place to live.

We do things not because they are easy, but because we thought they were going to be easy.

@souldessin @jforseth210 @nextcloud @protonmail yeah, this is similar to my setup — I have Linux running on a mini PC, a ZFS pool on a USB3 disk enclosure (with 4 6TB NAS drives), and all the software is managed with Docker Compose. Once I get some time, I’m thinking of doing offsite differential backups with `zfs send` to something like Amazon Glacier.

@jforseth210 the @nextcloud client can do automatic backup of photos and lots of other things; email is harder to self-host unless you have a “business” connection from your ISP, so you may want to look at @protonmail.

My favourite swipe typo of the day: "Norse cancelling headphones". Presumably that means Bluetooth is turned off.

What do you call a chicken who crosses the road, rolls in the mud, and then crosses back again? A dirty double-crosser.

@George I've been very happy with Universalis (universalis.com/) and they have a very transparent privacy policy. Unfortunately, you do have to pay attention to these things...

The largest known Supermassive Black Hole compared to our solar system

what's wild to me is that the exact people in education theory who will talk your ear off about growth mindset vs fixed mindset will also ask students to report their learning style as though, for many students, "i'm an X learner," won't immediately become a belief about their own learning used to justify disengaging from a lesson if they're struggling with it

@axbom is that why I only see about 1 out of every 4 posts from the people I follow unless I go to their instances manually?

Your Computer Isn't Yours - Slashdot

Security researcher Jeffrey Paul, writes in a blog post: On modern versions of macOS, you simply can't power on your computer, launch a text editor or eBook reader, and write or read, without a log of your activity being transmitted and stored. It turns out that in the current version of the macOS, ...
